Star gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been banned for 21 months after testing positive for a prohibited substance. The International Testing Agency (ITA) conducted a doping test on Karmakar and found her sample to contain Higenamine, a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The ban will end on July 10, 2023 and will include the time period since the sample was collected on October 11, 2021. The ITA confirmed the ban in a statement and added that Karmakar’s results have been disqualified from that date. The ban flies in the face of claims made by Indian officials that her “suspension” was not related to doping. The ITA works under the supervision of WADA and the International Olympic Committee to implement anti-doping programs. Karmakar became famous after finishing fourth in the vault event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
