The Finance Minister declared that the government would subsidize tomatoes, selling them at a rate of 70 rupees per kilogram over the upcoming weekend in Delhi.

Cooperative societies like NFFA and NAFED will be distributing tomatoes procured from several states at half the current market rate.

The current high of 140rs per kg has made it insufferable for the common man to buy the vegetable.

In contrast, just a few months ago in April, angry farmers were dumping tomatoes on the road in protest as their selling price dropped.

Even multi national food chain’s like McDonalds’ have stopped using tomatoes in their food preparations.

The FM said, import restrictions is lifted for the import of tomatoes from Nepal.

The first lot of the import will reach in Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur by Friday.
