On the 120th day of the ongoing Iran-related conflict escalation cycle, the government of Iran issued a strong condemnation of recent US military strikes, calling them a “clear violation of mutual understanding protocols” and destabilizing to an already fragile regional security environment.

Officials in Tehran stated that the strikes targeted facilities allegedly linked to strategic defense infrastructure. According to Iranian defense representatives, the targeted sites were operating under previously understood limitations discussed through indirect diplomatic channels involving regional mediators. Tehran argued that the attacks crossed “red lines” and violated what it referred to as a “non-formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)-style restraint mechanism” that had been loosely guiding tensions in recent months.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson described the US action as “illegal aggression disguised as deterrence.” He further warned that such operations would “end any remaining trust-building pathways,” implying that diplomatic engagement may now be suspended or significantly downgraded.

Washington, however, defended the strikes as “precision defensive actions” aimed at preventing imminent threats to its forces and allied positions in the Middle East. US officials argued that intelligence indicated “active preparation of hostile operations” from targeted sites.

Analysts suggest that this latest escalation marks one of the most serious breakdowns in informal de-escalation arrangements seen in months. Even without a formal treaty in place, both sides had reportedly maintained tacit operational boundaries to avoid direct large-scale conflict.

Iranian state media has framed the strikes as part of a broader pattern of coercion, while public messaging in Tehran has emphasized national unity and readiness for “proportionate response options.” Military observers note that Iran’s rhetoric has grown increasingly firm, suggesting that further retaliatory steps are being considered.
