Kolkata: Kolkata Police have registered a case against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and organisers of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad following allegations of violations of a Calcutta High Court order during a foundation day programme held on Cathedral Road on August 28.
The rally was organised by the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress. The Calcutta High Court had reportedly granted conditional permission for the event in central Kolkata.
High Court Conditions Allegedly Breached
According to the allegations, one of the key conditions imposed by the court was that the rally should occupy only one lane of the two-lane road, while the other lane was to remain free for traffic movement.
Police have cited alleged traffic disruption, barricade breaches and delays in connection with the case.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the court’s conditions were not followed during the rally. He claimed that both lanes were occupied and said he had directed the police to register an FIR and approach the Calcutta High Court over the matter.
Opposition Leaders Back AllegationsRitabrata Banerjee, described in the report as the official Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a leader of a rebel Trinamool faction, also supported the allegations.
He claimed that the court had imposed restrictions on both the number of participants and the portion of the road that could be used for the rally. He further alleged that a section of the crowd breached barricades separating the two lanes.
No Immediate Reaction From Mamata Faction
At the time of the report, there was no immediate response from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress regarding the police case and allegations of violating the court’s conditions.
The allegations remain subject to investigation and any further legal proceedings.
