New Delhi: The number plate “P 7” has set a Guinness World Record as the most expensive number plate ever sold in an auction. The plate, which was sold for a whopping Rs 31 crore ($4.2 million USD) in Abu Dhabi, was purchased by an Indian businessman, Balwinder Sahani, in 2016.

The previous record was held by another Abu Dhabi number plate, “F1,” which sold for Dh52.2 million ($14.2 million USD) in 2008.

The “P 7” number plate is made of gold and features the number “7” in diamonds. The plate was part of a special auction that featured over 90 rare and distinguished number plates from Abu Dhabi.

The auction, which was held by Emirates Auction in October 2016, generated a total of Dh95 million ($25.8 million USD) in revenue from the sale of the unique number plates.

Balwinder Sahani, who is known for his love of unique and expensive number plates, also purchased another number plate, “O 9,” for Dh25 million ($6.8 million USD) during the same auction.

The record-breaking purchase of the “P 7” number plate has garnered international attention and has sparked a renewed interest in the market for rare and unique number plates.
