Jabalpur: The death toll in the tragic cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh has risen to nine, while rescue teams continue extensive search operations for missing passengers. The incident, which occurred late evening near the popular tourist zone of Bargi reservoir in Jabalpur district, has sparked concerns over safety arrangements and overcrowding on tourist boats operating in the region.
According to officials, the cruise boat carrying tourists overturned after allegedly losing balance amid strong winds and sudden turbulence in the reservoir waters. Local fishermen and nearby residents were the first to rush toward the accident site after hearing cries for help. Soon after, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and district administration launched rescue efforts.
Authorities confirmed that several passengers were rescued alive and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, nine people, including women and children, lost their lives in the mishap. Divers continued combing the deep waters overnight as fears remain that a few passengers may still be missing.
Eyewitnesses stated that panic spread quickly after water entered the vessel. Many passengers reportedly did not have access to life jackets, while some struggled to swim in the dark waters. Survivors narrated terrifying moments of chaos as families became separated during the accident.
District officials said preliminary investigations indicate possible negligence by the cruise operator. Questions are being raised regarding whether the boat exceeded passenger capacity and if weather advisories were ignored before the vessel sailed. The administration has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial compensation for the families of the deceased. He also assured strict action against anyone found responsible for violating safety norms.
Bargi Dam, located on the Narmada River, has become a major tourist attraction over the years due to its scenic cruises and water sports activities. However, locals have often raised concerns about inadequate monitoring and poor enforcement of safety regulations.
Political leaders from across parties condoled the deaths and demanded stronger safety mechanisms for water tourism projects. Social media was flooded with emotional appeals and messages mourning the victims.
Rescue teams continue operations with boats, sonar equipment, and divers searching deeper sections of the reservoir. Officials stated that the operation will continue until all passengers are accounted for.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter compliance with safety standards in India’s growing adventure and tourism sectors. Authorities are expected to conduct fresh inspections of tourist boats operating across Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.
