The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts in Kerala, signaling the potential for extremely heavy rainfall and associated hazards. The affected districts include Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. This warning comes in the wake of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan and northern central Uttar Pradesh, which has intensified the monsoon conditions over the region .

Impact of Heavy Rainfall

The heavy rains have already led to significant disruptions across the state. In Idukki district, landslides have been reported, causing damage to infrastructure and posing risks to residents. The continuous downpour has also led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, making transportation challenging and affecting daily life. Authorities have responded by closing schools and restricting travel to high-altitude areas, especially during nighttime, to ensure public safety .

Precautionary Measures and Alerts

In addition to the red alerts, the IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for other districts, indicating varying degrees of rainfall intensity. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and be vigilant of potential hazards such as landslides and flash floods. The state government, along with local authorities, is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions.
