Neiphiu Rio retains seat in Nagaland Assembly election with historic victory for first woman candidate

Nagaland : Neiphiu Rio, the current Chief Minister of Nagaland, has emerged victorious once again from his constituency Northern Agami II in the recently concluded Nagaland Assembly election. Rio secured 17,045 votes, amounting to a staggering 92% of the total votes polled. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a total of 15 seats and is leading in 21 constituencies, according to official sources.

The elections were held for 59 Assembly seats on February 27, while the Akuluto seat was won uncontested by BJP nominee Kazheto Kinimi. The NDPP won 11 seats while the BJP secured four seats in the election. As per the Election Commission website, the NDPP is leading in 13 seats while the BJP is ahead in eight constituencies.

The NDPP-BJP alliance fought the election on a 40:20 seat-sharing arrangement, and the results indicate that their strategy has paid off. The election has been a significant win for the ruling alliance, and the people of Nagaland have once again shown their confidence in the leadership of Chief Minister Rio.

The election has also witnessed history being created as Hekhani Jakhalu became the first woman to be elected to the Nagaland Assembly. Jakhalu, the NDPP candidate for the Dimapur III seat, secured 1,536 more votes than her nearest rival Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).

The results of the Nagaland Assembly election have been a significant boost for the ruling alliance, and the Chief Minister’s victory has added another feather to his cap. Rio has retained his seat from Northern Agami II for the fifth consecutive time and has won with over 91% of the total votes polled.

The election results are a clear indication of the people’s trust and faith in the leadership of Rio and the NDPP-BJP alliance. The ruling coalition has been able to showcase its performance and development-oriented agenda, which has resonated with the people of Nagaland.
