Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has taken a strong stand against abusive, defamatory and “double-meaning” remarks directed at women, saying that political criticism may be part of democracy but personal humiliation and degrading language should never be accepted.
Speaking in the Tamil Nadu Assembly during a discussion related to law and order, Vijay delivered one of his strongest statements yet on the growing controversy surrounding alleged remarks linked to actor Trisha Krishnan. Although he did not directly name Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, the timing and political context of his comments made it clear that the recent controversy had become a major issue in Tamil Nadu politics.
Vijay said freedom of speech and political criticism were legitimate in a democracy. Political leaders, he suggested, have every right to question governments and criticise their opponents. However, he stressed that freedom of expression should not become an excuse for personally attacking women or using vulgar and humiliating language.
According to reports, Vijay expressed concern over what he described as an increasing culture of obscenity and hostility in public political discourse. He said people were watching politicians who used defamatory language and double or multiple meanings while speaking about women.
The Chief Minister emphasised that politicians should remember the women in their own families before making insulting remarks about other women. He warned that dignity and respect must remain central to public life and that the law would take appropriate action if women were insulted.
The controversy comes after remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin during a Cauvery-related protest in Thanjavur last month. Supporters reportedly shouted the name of actor Trisha while he was speaking, following which a remark made by Stalin was interpreted by critics as an inappropriate innuendo directed at the actor.
The controversy quickly escalated into a major political confrontation between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, led by Vijay, and the opposition DMK. Udhayanidhi Stalin has denied that he intended to insult Trisha or any woman. He maintained that his comments were connected to the Cauvery issue and accused his political opponents of misrepresenting his words.
Despite the political disagreement over what exactly was intended by the remark, Vijay used his Assembly speech to make a broader point about the standards of political debate.
He said politicians could strongly disagree with one another and engage in harsh criticism, but they should not cross the line into personal humiliation. His message appeared aimed not only at one political opponent but at the wider political culture in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay also highlighted the importance of women in his political journey, saying women had played a major role in his electoral success. This gave his remarks additional political significance, especially as his government seeks to establish its identity and governing priorities.
By speaking strongly against derogatory language, Vijay has attempted to position his government as one that will defend women’s dignity in both politics and public life.
The Chief Minister’s intervention has now added a new dimension to the Trisha controversy. What began as a dispute over one alleged remark has developed into a wider debate about freedom of speech, political accountability and the treatment of women in public discourse.
As Tamil Nadu’s political battle intensifies, Vijay’s message remains clear: criticism may be democratic, but insults and humiliation should have no place in politics.
