Three accused acquitted, one held guilty in 2020 Hathras rape and murder case

Hathras : An SC/ST court has acquitted three of the four accused in the 2020 Hathras rape and murder case, while holding one accused guilty, according to reports on Thursday. The court held that Sandeep, aged 20, was guilty of the heinous crime, while Ravi (35), Luv Kush (23), and Ramu (26) were acquitted. The incident took place on September 14, when a Dalit woman was raped by the four upper-caste men in Hathras. The accused had attempted to strangle her to death as she resisted their rape attempt, resulting in her biting her tongue and suffering a severe cut. The victim later passed away on September 29 while undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. The district administration’s midnight cremation of the victim in her village, without the consent of her family, had sparked allegations of a cover-up and widespread criticism of the Yogi Adityanath government.
