RANCHI: The ongoing student agitation in Jharkhand intensified sharply on Monday as thousands of students and job aspirants marched towards the state Assembly in Ranchi, demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The march, which had been announced as a “Vidhan Sabha Gherao”, turned tense when protesters attempted to move past police barricades installed along the route.
According to reports from Ranchi, security forces used water cannons and lathi-charge as the crowd advanced. Tear gas was also used during the confrontation as police attempted to prevent protesters from moving closer to the Assembly complex. The development marked a major escalation in a movement that has continued for weeks and has increasingly become a major political and administrative challenge for the Hemant Soren government.
The students have been protesting against what they describe as irregularities, lack of transparency and alleged malpractice in recruitment examinations. Their demands have included an independent investigation, including a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into disputed examinations. The agitation has particularly focused attention on examinations conducted by JPSC and JSSC, institutions responsible for recruitment to important government posts in the state.
The dispute has continued despite several rounds of discussions between representatives of the protesting students and the state government. The government has maintained that a large majority of the students’ demands have already been addressed. Protesters, however, have rejected that assessment and argued that some of their most important demands remain unresolved. A major point of disagreement is the demand for a CBI investigation.
The controversy has its roots in concerns surrounding recruitment examinations, including the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination and other JSSC recruitment processes. Student groups have alleged that examination procedures have not always been sufficiently transparent and have questioned the handling of alleged leaks and other irregularities.
The issue has also acquired a political dimension. Opposition leaders have repeatedly raised allegations against the state government and demanded an independent investigation. BJP leaders have separately staged protests over the recruitment controversy and called for a CBI inquiry.
For students, however, the issue goes beyond political confrontation. Many aspirants spend several years preparing for government recruitment examinations, often investing significant amounts of money and time in coaching, study material and accommodation. Any uncertainty surrounding an examination can therefore have a direct impact on their careers.
The protest movement has gathered momentum in Ranchi over recent weeks. Earlier demonstrations saw students gathering in large numbers, carrying placards and raising slogans demanding reform of the recruitment system. On July 29, thousands of students marched in Ranchi against alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC examinations. Their slogans included demands for cancellation of the disputed JPSC preliminary examination and a CBI investigation.
Security arrangements around the Assembly were strengthened ahead of Monday’s march. Authorities imposed restrictions around the Assembly area and deployed additional personnel to prevent protesters from entering the high-security zone. The administration had anticipated the possibility of a large gathering and prepared multiple layers of barricading.
The situation became increasingly tense once protesters reached the barricades. Reports said sections of the crowd attempted to push through the security arrangements. Police responded with water cannons and lathi-charge, while tear gas was also reported as part of the effort to disperse the crowd.
The confrontation has raised concerns about the handling of student protests in the state. Chief Minister Hemant Soren had earlier emphasized dialogue and said the government was prepared to discuss the concerns of students. He stressed that the administration wanted to address the issue through discussion rather than force.
The latest confrontation now puts pressure on both sides to find a way out of the deadlock. For the students, accepting anything less than an independent investigation could be difficult after weeks of mobilisation. For the government, allowing the protest to continue unchecked could create further law-and-order challenges around the Assembly and increase political pressure.
The central question remains whether the government and student representatives can return to negotiations and reach an agreement on the disputed demands. Until that happens, the Jharkhand recruitment controversy is likely to remain a major issue, with thousands of young aspirants waiting for clarity about examinations, investigations and their employment prospects.
