The Indian women’s cricket team scripted history by clinching the country’s first gold medal in the sport at the Asian Games after India’s 10m men’s air rifle team earned the top honour.

The women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs to bring home the second gold medal of the 2023 Asian Games campaign.

Facing a challenging pitch for batting, the Indian women’s team managed to post a challenge of 116 for seven.

Oshadi Ranasinghe kept Sri Lanka alive for the longest time in chase but her wicket has Sri Lanka with too much to get as they eventually finished on 97.8.

Titas Sadhu orchestrated a dream start with the ball for India women picking up three wickets in two overs and finished with astonoshing figures of 3/6 from 4 overs.

Batting was challenging on this pitch, but Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues displayed admirable resistance against the Sri Lankan spinners.

They formed a solid half-century partnership, adding 73 runs for the second wicket.
