Pune: A scientist working with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has been arrested in Pune for allegedly providing confidential information to Pakistani agents, according to officials on Tuesday.

The accused scientist, Nishant Agarwal, was taken into custody on Monday from his residence in the Vishrantwadi area of Pune by a joint team of military intelligence and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officials.

According to the officials, Agarwal was in touch with two Pakistani agents through social media platforms, and had been sharing confidential information related to DRDO’s missile programs, cyber security and space technology.

After receiving specific inputs about Agarwal’s activities, a trap was laid and he was arrested, the officials said. They also seized his mobile phone and laptop for further investigation.

Agarwal, who hails from Roorkee in Uttarakhand, had been working with DRDO since 2017 and was posted at the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune.

The DRDO, India’s premier military research organization, has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
