Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating fire that engulfed a Jhuggi cluster in Rohini, resulting in the tragic loss of two young lives. The fire, which broke out early on Sunday morning, also led to the destruction of approximately 800 shanties, leaving hundreds of families displaced.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, CM Gupta conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of the government’s full support during this challenging time. She emphasized that the administration is committed to providing immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation to the affected individuals.

“The loss of young lives is a tragedy that deeply saddens us all. The government stands with the affected families and will ensure that they receive all necessary assistance,” CM Gupta stated.

The Chief Minister also directed the Delhi Fire Services and local authorities to expedite rescue operations and assess the extent of the damage. Emergency teams were promptly deployed to the site, and medical aid was provided to those in need.

In addition to immediate relief efforts, CM Gupta announced that the government would initiate a comprehensive survey of the affected area to determine the long-term needs of the displaced residents. This includes providing temporary shelters, food, clothing, and medical care.

The Delhi government has also pledged to rebuild the damaged Jhuggi cluster, ensuring that the new structures are safe and equipped with essential amenities. “We are committed to improving the living conditions of our citizens, especially those residing in vulnerable areas,” CM Gupta affirmed.

The incident has drawn widespread attention to the challenges faced by residents of informal settlements in Delhi. Advocacy groups have long highlighted the need for better infrastructure, fire safety measures, and access to basic services in such communities.

In response to these concerns, CM Gupta reiterated her government’s commitment to slum development. Earlier this year, the Delhi government allocated ₹696 crore for slum development, marking a 157% increase from previous budgets. The funds are intended for infrastructure improvements, including the construction of permanent housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

“Our focus is on providing permanent solutions to the challenges faced by slum dwellers. Where there are Jhuggis, there will be pucca (permanent) houses,” CM Gupta declared during a recent visit to a slum in Vasant Kunj.

The Chief Minister’s proactive approach has been welcomed by residents and advocacy groups alike. Many hope that the government’s commitment will lead to tangible improvements in the living conditions of Delhi’s informal settlements.
