In the evening at Balasore, Odisha, a passenger train collided with the wrecked carriages of another railway, inflicting at least 179 injuries. Many are thought to be trapped.
Amitabh Sharma, a spokesman for the Railway Ministry, told NDTV that the Coromandel Express, which was headed from Kolkata to Chennai, collided with the wrecked carriages of the other train, which was headed from Bengaluru to Kolkata.
Rescue efforts are being supervised by Sudhanshu Sarangi, chief of the Odisha Fire Services. Balasore’s local hospitals and medical schools have been informed.
The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and its state counterpart are searching for trapped passengers and clearing debris to get to them with more than a hundred personnel.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, stated that she and other senior bureaucrats, including the chief secretary, are continuously monitoring the situation.
Pramila Malik, the minister of revenue for Odisha, has been instructed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to visit the accident site, according to news agency PTI.
