New Delhi: China faces an influenza outbreak, and the city of Xi’an is likely to declare a pandemic-style lockdown to combat the surge in infection cases. The city, which is home to nearly 13 million people and the famous terracotta warriors, has released an emergency response plan that includes closing businesses, schools, and crowded places in case of a severe flu outbreak. The plan outlines four levels of severity and corresponding responses. At the highest level, affected regions will be locked down, traffic quarantines will be implemented, and economic activity will be suspended. Schools and nurseries will be closed, and medical staff will monitor the health of children and students. The move comes as China struggles to reopen after lifting all Covid restrictions in January. The country implemented strict Covid regulations during the pandemic, including months-long lockdowns in some cities, but was among the last to end practices like mass testing and border quarantines. The potential return to Covid-style regulations has sparked memories of food shortages and confinement, causing concern among the public.
