New Delhi : A man who was acquitted by the Supreme Court in a horrific rape-murder case has been arrested again for committing another heinous crime. The man, named Vinod, was among three individuals who were originally sentenced to death for the 2012 rape, torture, and murder of a 19-year-old woman. However, after a review of the case, the Supreme Court found that the prosecution failed to prove their case and granted the men “the benefit of the doubt.” As a result, Vinod was freed from prison in November of last year.
Despite being granted a second chance, Vinod did not seem to have learned from his past mistakes. In the early hours of January 26th, 2023, Vinod and his accomplice allegedly killed an auto-rickshaw driver in Dwarka Sector-13. The police reported that the accused first got into the auto, and then slit the driver’s throat. The accomplice, named Pawan, was arrested soon after the crime was committed by scanning security footage in the area. Through questioning, the police were led to Vinod and arrested him on January 29th.
It is truly heartbreaking to see a person who was given the opportunity for a fresh start, squander it by committing another violent crime. The three men were originally accused of kidnapping, gang-raping, and brutally killing the 19-year-old woman in February 2012. Her mutilated body was found three days after her kidnapping, and the trial court deemed the case as “rarest of rare” and sentenced the three men to death in 2014. However, on November 7th, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict and acquitted the three men.
In conclusion, it is imperative that the justice system takes all necessary measures to ensure that individuals who have been acquitted of serious crimes do not pose a threat to society. The fact that Vinod was arrested for committing another crime so soon after being released from prison is a reminder of the importance of monitoring individuals who have been involved in violent crimes, even if they have been acquitted.
