Noida Airport witnessed a significant milestone ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit as three Russian military aircraft landed at the newly operational facility, marking the first reported landing of foreign aircraft at the airport. The arrival comes at a time when India is preparing for a major diplomatic gathering in New Delhi and the expected visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The aircraft landed at around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. One of the aircraft was identified as an IL-76, a Russian military transport aircraft widely used for the movement of personnel and equipment. A Russian advance team and military officials were reportedly among those who arrived in India as part of preparations connected with the high-profile visit.

The development is important not only from a diplomatic perspective but also for Noida Airport itself. The airport is a new addition to the National Capital Region’s aviation infrastructure, and the arrival of foreign military aircraft represents an early indication of its potential role in handling high-profile international movements.

Until now, foreign military aircraft arriving in India for major diplomatic visits have traditionally used Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The decision to use Noida Airport for the Russian aircraft therefore places the facility in the spotlight just as international attention turns toward India.

Security arrangements have also become a major focus. The three Russian aircraft remained parked at the airport through Wednesday, while Indian airport security officials and Russian personnel monitored the aircraft and surrounding arrangements.

The landing is closely connected with the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Several heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit, making security, transportation and logistical planning a major priority for Indian authorities.

Putin’s expected participation adds particular significance to the Russian aircraft movement. Advance teams are commonly involved in coordinating security, communications, transportation and other arrangements before the arrival of senior political leaders.

For Noida Airport, the event is also a test of its ability to support international-level operations. Handling military transport aircraft requires coordination between airport authorities, security agencies and visiting teams.

The arrival of the Russian aircraft thus carries significance on several levels. It highlights the growing importance of Noida Airport, demonstrates the scale of preparations for the BRICS Summit and reflects the importance attached to Putin’s upcoming India visit.

As preparations intensify across the National Capital Region, the first foreign aircraft landing at Noida Airport has emerged as one of the notable developments in the build-up to the summit.
