A shocking double-homicide case in Massachusetts has drawn widespread attention after a 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager was accused of killing his mother and younger brother inside their family home in Acton. The case has become even more disturbing because investigators say the teenager had previously used the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family.
The teenager, identified as Arjun Aravind, is a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. Authorities have charged him in connection with the deaths of his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind. He faces two counts of murder, along with additional assault and vehicle-related charges.
The incident came to light on Tuesday evening, August 11, when a tutor arrived at the family’s Martha Lane home for a scheduled appointment. The tutor could not get inside or contact anyone at the residence. Concerned, the tutor contacted Arjun’s father.
The father had also been unable to reach his wife and children. He told police that he had last spoken with his wife earlier that morning before leaving for work. His younger son had reportedly been seen around noon.
Acton police were asked to conduct a welfare check. When officers arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m., they discovered two people dead inside the residence. Siddharth was found on the first floor, while his mother was discovered in the finished basement. Authorities said both victims had suffered obvious trauma. The exact cause and manner of death were still awaiting determination by the chief medical examiner.
Arjun was not at the property when officers arrived. His mother’s green 2014 Honda Accord was also missing. Police subsequently issued information about the teenager and vehicle and urged members of the public not to approach him.
The search ended early Wednesday morning in nearby Wayland. According to authorities, police responding to an unrelated alarm in a parking area on Andrew Avenue encountered the missing vehicle. Arjun was found inside the car and taken into custody without incident.
Investigators are now examining what happened inside the family home and what may have led to the alleged killings. One of the most concerning elements of the investigation involves Arjun’s reported online activity.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators learned that Arjun had recently displayed concerning behaviour, including using the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories involving the killing of his family. Authorities have not suggested that the online searches alone establish a motive, but they are examining them as part of the broader investigation.
Arjun has also been charged with assault and battery involving a household or family member, assault and battery, unauthorized use of a vehicle and theft of a motor vehicle. Prosecutors said murder charges would be handled in a court with jurisdiction over murder cases involving a defendant of his age.
The investigation remains active, with Acton police, Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office involved. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the weapon allegedly used.
