The 2026 Assam Assembly Election results have delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has successfully led the BJP to a third consecutive term, marking one of the party’s strongest performances in the state’s electoral history. According to Election Commission trends and final results, the BJP alone secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while allies AGP and BPF added further strength to the NDA tally.

The Congress, led in Assam by senior leader Gaurav Gogoi, failed to stop the saffron surge and managed to secure only 19 seats. Several regional parties and independents shared the remaining seats.

Among the biggest highlights of the election was the victory of Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari. BJP heavyweight Ajanta Neog retained Golaghat, while senior BJP leader Ranoj Pegu won from Dhemaji.

One of the most talked-about results came from Jorhat, where Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. The defeat is being viewed as a major setback for the Congress in Upper Assam.

The election also witnessed impressive voter participation. The state recorded over 85 percent turnout, reflecting high political engagement across urban and rural constituencies. Analysts believe welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and strong organisational strength helped the BJP dominate the contest.

Party-wise tally in Assam Assembly Election 2026:

  • BJP — 82
  • Congress — 19
  • AGP — 10
  • BPF — 10
  • AIUDF — 2
  • Raijor Dal — 1
  • Others — 2

The Election Commission clarified that the official constituency-wise Form-20 data would be released after verification by Returning Officers.

Political observers say the results have further strengthened Himanta Biswa Sarma’s stature not only in Assam but across the Northeast. The BJP’s massive victory is expected to influence regional politics ahead of future Lok Sabha elections.

With the NDA comfortably crossing the majority mark, Assam is now set to witness another term under BJP leadership, while the opposition faces tough questions over strategy, alliances, and leadership ahead of the next electoral battle.
