‘Zombie Drug’ in Sierra Leone, Country Declares Emergency

The recent bizarre yet alarming situation of an African country has grabbed global attention. 

The country of West Africa, Sierra Leone suffers a serious setback after the people are getting high on ‘kush’ drug or also known as ‘zombie drug’ and digging graves in order to draw human bones, one of the ingredients of the drug. President of the country,  Julius Maada Bio considers this a ‘death trap’ and declares a national emergency due to the enormous number of hospital admissions caused by drug intake. As per the reports published by Times Entertainment, the number of hospital admissions due to illness caused by ‘Kush’ cascaded to 4000% between 2022 and 2023. 

The president says that the country is facing an ‘existential crisis’ due to the havoc created by the drug. According to the BBC reports, the sight in the country is quite ravaging as caused by the addiction to the drug, young men are seen with their limbs swollen. 

Habib Taigore Kamara, Executive Director of Social Linkages said the Country needs to adopt the similar structures as those utilized during the Covid and Ebola crises, as reported by The Times of India. The Psychiatric Hospital head regards the president’s decision of declaring national emergency as the ‘right step’ towards combating the drug issue.
