The founder of NewsClick, Journalist Prabir Purkayastha and the HR head of the news portal Amit Chakravarty were arrested.

The arrest happened under the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on Tuesday.

This arrest occurred following a New York Times investigation which claimed the portal has been receiving funding from China.

“This is India’s McCarthy-like moment,” said former editor of The Hindu N. Ram to one of India’s leading television anchors Rajdeep Sardesai.

“This is an attack on the freedom of the press,” Ram said.
