New Delhi : Violent clashes broke out on Friday between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors inside the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) house. The brawl was reportedly triggered by Delhi’s newly elected Mayor Shelly Oberoi, who invalidated one vote in the election to the six-member Standing Committee and declared that there would be no recounting of votes.

Tensions rose after BJP councillors objected to the decision to invalidate one vote and demanded a recount. However, Mayor Oberoi refused to budge and insisted that the election results would be declared without the invalid vote. This led to a heated argument, with BJP councillors shouting slogans against the Mayor and threatening legal action if the results were declared.

The situation soon escalated, with both parties engaging in physical altercations, flinging water bottles, fruit, and ballot boxes at one another. The scuffle resulted in several women councillors sustaining injuries.

The election of the Standing Committee members began on Wednesday evening, shortly after AAP’s Shelly Oberoi was elected as the new Mayor of Delhi. However, the election was interrupted as the two parties exchanged blows, leading to over a dozen adjournments.

The incident has been widely condemned, with many calling for strict action against those responsible for the violence. It is essential to note that such incidents of political violence and physical clashes in the political arena create a negative impact on the public and democratic values.

The situation at the Delhi MCD house remains tense, and efforts are underway to restore calm and bring the situation under control. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for political parties to resolve their differences peacefully and uphold democratic values.
