A Scattered Take on Modern Love: “Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat” Review

Mumbai : Director Anurag Kashyap is attempting a timely and well-intended but scattered take on modern love across cultures in his latest film, “Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat.” The film follows two parallel narratives featuring the same actors as almost lovers, exploring issues of intolerance in relationships across faith and class, toxic patriarchy, and the naivety of the internet generation. The addition of a bigoted and homophobic elderly couple adds to the disconcerting themes. While the director’s attack on the concept of “izzat” is commendable and the depiction of the disposability of a Muslim in society is haunting, the film falls short as a compelling screenplay.

The setting is intriguing, but the socio-political commentary feels loose and disconnected. The character DJ Mohabbat, who connects the two tales, turns out to be a disappointing Rumi-like figure who adds more sweetness than spark to the narrative. The commentary on the internet generation becomes repetitive, as does the imitation of a popular YouTuber by one of the characters. Despite uneven writing, the performances of Alaya F and Karan Mehta shine, with Alaya proving to be relatable in both of her roles, and Karan bringing raw emotion to the screen. Overall, “Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat” has a promising premise, but falls short in execution.
