Japan : According to the weather agency, an earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan, on Saturday. The earthquake registered a lower 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7. The quake occurred off the Nemuro peninsula on the northern island, at a depth of 61 kilometers (38 miles), according to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience. The temblor mainly rattled the eastern part of Hokkaido at 10:27 p.m. However, the Japan Meteorological Agency stated that no tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake.
Japan is a country that is highly prone to frequent earthquakes, and the recent earthquake off the coast of Hokkaido serves as another reminder of this. In the past, massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have claimed the lives of over 50,000 people in these two countries. As of now, there have been no reports of any casualties or damages in Japan due to the earthquake.
