India tops the medal tally at the 34th International Biology Olympiad, UAE

With every student obtaining a gold medal, India took home the most medals at the 34th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2023, which took place in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, between July 3–July 11, 2023. This is the first time India has produced an all-gold effort and finished first in the IBO medal count.

This year’s pupils included:

Dhruv Advani, a Bengaluru, Karnataka, native

Rajasthani athlete Ishan Pednekar (GOLD) from Kota

Megh Chhabda (GOLD) of Maharashtra’s Jalna

Rohit Panda (GOLD) of Chattisgarh’s Risali

In addition to two leaders, Prof. Madan M. Chaturvedi (Former Senior Professor, Delhi University) and Dr. Anupama Ronad (HBCSE, TIFR), the team included two scientific observers, Drs. V. V. Binoy (National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru) and Rambhadur Subedi (NIRRH, Mumbai), as well as two scientific observers.

This year’s IBO featured 293 students from 76 different nations. Only one other nation, Singapore, managed to win four gold medals. 29 gold medals in total were given out.

In the past, India has won the most medals in the following categories: Junior Science (in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022) and Astronomy & Astrophysics (in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2021).
