A tragic road accident on Mumbai’s Coastal Road claimed three lives early Sunday after a speeding BMW crashed through a barrier and fell from a bridge into an under-construction parking area. CCTV footage captured the dramatic moments of the accident, showing the luxury vehicle travelling at high speed before losing control and plunging from the elevated section.
The accident took place at around 5:20 a.m. on September 20, 2026, while the BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. According to officials, the vehicle crashed near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College. The car reportedly hit a boundary or edge barrier before falling from the bridge.
The CCTV footage has provided investigators with an important visual record of what happened. It shows the BMW approaching the area at considerable speed before suddenly crashing through the roadside barrier. The vehicle then falls from the elevated road and lands in an area where parking-related construction work was underway. The impact caused extensive damage to the car.
Four people were travelling in the BMW at the time of the crash. All four were taken to civic-run Nair Hospital following the accident. Three occupants were declared dead, while the fourth suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the trauma ward in critical condition.
Two of the deceased were identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhairya Seth. The third deceased occupant, a man believed to be around 25 years old, had not been identified at the time of the initial police statement. The injured passenger was also initially reported as unidentified.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are now being examined by Mumbai Police. Investigators are expected to look at the speed of the vehicle, the driver’s actions immediately before the crash, road conditions and other factors that may have contributed to the accident.
The accident has once again brought attention to road safety on Mumbai’s Coastal Road. The corridor is designed as an access-controlled route and has designated speed restrictions. According to information reported by NDTV, the maximum speed on the main carriageway is 80 kmph, while lower limits apply in tunnels, ramps, curves and interchanges.
The Coastal Road has become an important transport corridor connecting different parts of Mumbai and is designed to reduce travelling time. Its smooth and relatively uninterrupted stretches can allow vehicles to travel quickly, making adherence to speed limits and lane discipline particularly important.
For investigators, the CCTV footage could prove significant in reconstructing the sequence of events. Police will also examine the vehicle, the crash site and other available evidence as part of the inquiry.
