The youngest finalist at the FIDE chess world cup bags a silver medal against world no.1 grandmaster Magnus Carlsen.

Carlsen won the game with 1.5-0.5 in a tie breaker on Thursday. The first two games had ended in a draw.

Praggnanandhaa had previously beaten World No.2 and 3 in the world cup, becoming the second Indian player to reserve a seat in the finals since Viswanathan Anand.

Carlsen has won the chess world cup for the first time in his decade long career.

Carlsen while talking to chess24 after winning the game called Pragg “mentality monster” furthermore he added how the future of the game is in good hands.

“They are all very good, Gukesh is clearly the strongest classical player right now. And then, you have Pragg and (Nodirbek) Abdusattorov who are really strong but also mentality monsters. And then, I think on a tier slightly below, we have Vincent and a few others. But what I think is pretty clear is that chess is in good hands for the future. The generation of players, born from 1990-1994 really have dominated for a long time, and finally now, with these youngsters born in 2003 and after, we have a generation that’s worthy of succeeding us.”

By winning the silver medal, Praggnanandhaa also secured a ticket to the FIDE Candidates tournament.
