Took risk with listing style, faced teething problems: CJI

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice U ULalit said the reduction in pendency had been achieved due to efforts of his brother and sister judges and members of the Bar. “A lot of things have been said about listing etc. Let me clarify, it is true that we have taken a risk with the new style of listing, so there are naturally bound to be some teething problems. But all judges are on the same page. Till yesterday we could dispose of more than 5,000 matters, 5,200 to be precise as against filing which was just about 1,135. That is all possible because of the efforts put in by my brother and sister judges and all of you, the members of the Bar,” the CJI said.
The CJI admitted that because of the new listing policy there had been instances where matters got listed at the eleventh hour with the shortest possible notice that created additional workload for the judges and for the advocates but the problem would soon be resolved. “I am really indebted to all my brother and sister judges for discharging everything with a smiling face. That is why we have been able to dispose of something like 5,200 matters as against 1,135 filing. Which means we have been able to reduce the arrears by at least about 4,000. Which is agood beginning,” he said.
The CJI said he had always been dreaming of becoming a SC judge ever since he joined the legal profession and he immediately accepted the judgeship when it was offered to him. Known for his cool temperment not only as ajudge, but also when he was a practising advocate in the SC, Justice Lalit said he developed his approach by watching AG K K Venugopal who argued the case on law and facts and no emotion.
